Flute Lessons

About Me:

In 2011, I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Performance-Instrumental (flute) and in 2013 I graduated with a Master's degree in Music Education, both from Pensacola Christian College. I was involved in the Pensacola Christian College Symohony  (PCCymphony) for 5 years and held the position of Principal Flute for 2 years. I played in the PCC band for 6 years. I was also involved in the Woodwind Ensemble. I have played the flute for 17 years and the piccolo for 11 years. I played in Rejoice Orchestra for Campus Church at Pensacola Christian College for the televised broadcast of Rejoice TV and was a session player for Rejoice in the Lord recording studio. I also have the experience of putting together my own recitals.

My Experience:

My teaching experience began during the summers of my college years as I taught private lessons when I was home from school. Then, as a graduate assistant during my master's I assisted and taught music classes. For two years, I served as the elementary and secondary music director in a Christian school. I encourage my students to practice regularly and help them with how they should spend their practice time to most benefit them and help them to progress. Striving for excellence in all that I do is very important to me and I try to instill that same mentality in my students. While striving for excellence, I encourage my students to have fun. If they are not having fun then they will not enjoy what they are learning.

My Methods:

For beginning flute students, I typically start with the Rubank Method Books. I will have the student begin with the Elementary book and then progress to the Intermediate book followed by the Advanced book. As the student progresses I will also begin introducing solo pieces to add to their repertoire appropriate for possible recitals. For adult students and more advanced players I will add etude books and other exercise books along with the Rubank Method Books.

Within each lesson I work on scales, technique, intonation, and musicality. Each of these I use in each piece that is studied. I usually use a lesson book and a solo book so that the student can receive adequate instruction in all these areas. As the student progresses other exercise books are added into the lesson. Within the lessons I apply music theory and history to their pieces and take into consideration age level so as not to overwhelm them. I believe it is important to understand these concepts as you progress in order to play the pieces in the correct styles. My practice time requirements for students vary based on level of proficiency. I want the students to enjoy learning and develop a love for music and have fun in their lessons as well as learn.

My Teaching Style:

It is such a joy to see my students develop a love and passion for music! When we have been working on a concept that might be harder than others and the student finally understands the concept, there is such a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment for both myself and the student. Because progression is so important, I strive to set goals for my students at each lesson. As the goals are met and acknowledged the student then is more eager to continue learning.
